‘TENDER PROMISES’ – Demetre Chiparus – Circa 1920.

A bronze and ivory group of a pierrot and pierrette, both wearing cloche caps and ruffled collars, the female figure with knee-length full-skirted dress with an ornate belt, the male figure with a decorated loose shirt, and tights with a diamond-shaped design. They both have ivory hands and faces. The pierrot appears to be whispering into the pierrette’s ear. The very complex brown onyx base has diamond-shaped attachments in multi-coloured onyx. Chiparus designed superb bases for all his major works.

Height: 37cm.
Length: 74cm.
Signatures: Engraved script ‘Chiparus’ on the top of the marble base, the number ‘21’ on the foot of the pierrot.
References: Alberto Shayo, Chiparus Master of Art Deco, Second Edition, Abbeville Press Publishers, 1999, pg. 86.

The model on offer is in superb condition, the ivory without any unsightly cracks. The patina is in surprisingly bright and in good condition too, considering the age of the piece. The patina is in the best condition we have ever seen on this model, both sizes included. It was produced in two sized, this version being the larger size. The smaller version is 26cm high and 50cm long.

This particular design by Chiparus is very likely to have inspired Ferdinand Preiss’s ‘The Bathers’ (according to Alberto Shayo in his book Ferdinand Preiss, Art Deco Sculptor, The Fire and the Flame, pg. 40-41) – which has two bathers in swimsuits, facing one another in a very similar pose.

The prices of Chiparus sculptures have tightened because of the recent difficulty in importing and exporting ivory across the world.   However, major works by Chiparus are getting harder and harder to find and acquire, especially those with more than one figure on a single base.

BLOW-OUT ‘CALLA LILY’ VASE – Emile Gallé – Circa 1900.

A monumental double-overlaid, acid-etched and carved mould-blown vase, with red calla lilies (also know as arum lilies) against an amber ground, with dark leaves.
Height: 35cm.
Signatures: Cameo ‘Gallé’ on side of vessel.
References: (i) Victor Arwas, ‘Glass Art Nouveau to Art Deco’, Academy Editions, 1987, pgs. 106-153.
(ii) Alistair Duncan & Georges de Bartha, ‘Glass by Gallé’, Harry N Abrams Inc., 1984, pictured pg. 197.

Gallé blow-out (also known as mould-blown, or soufflé) vases are rare and very sought after. The technique involves blowing a multi-layered vessel (with layers of glass in different colours) into a mould, which has the 3-dimensional design of the final product. Then, by acid-etching and wheel carving, the detail emerges in the desired colours and relief.

The Calla Lily vase is large and heavy, and one is surprised after reading the dimensions and seeing the picture, at the enormity of it in real life.

The Calla Lily is quite a rare vase, and as far as blow-out vases are concerned, it is second in size to the Elephant vase. When the Calla Lily vase appears on the international market, it is snapped up by collectors because of its very appealing subject matter.

The Calla Lily comes in a number of colours, namely yellow, blue, red, and pale purple. All colourways are equally sough after. The model on offer has particularly rich red and amber colours.

Pairs of iridescent vases in metal mounts are most sought-after.  It is even more delightful to find a matching pair.

laliqueoranopal-EDIT

Vase ORAN – Rene Lalique – First executed in 1927.

A large opalescent glass vase, with a slightly widening cylindrical body, moulded extremely deeply with chrysanthemums and stylised leaves.

Height: 26.2cm.
Signatures: Signed ‘R Lalique’ on base.
Reference: (i) Felix Marcilhac, Rene Lalique – Catalogue Raisonne Des Oeuvres de Verre, Paris, 1989, p. 438 no. 999.
(ii) Patricia Bayer & Mark Waller, The Art of Rene Lalique, 1988, p. 34 frame 36, p. 140 frame 246.

‘ORAN’ is possibly the most massive of Lalique’s designs, and is more a piece of sculpture than just a vase.

Because of its size and weight, it tends to incur damage when being cleaned, and so few perfect examples are in existence. The rim has usually been trimmed! The vase offered is in immaculate untrimmed condition, the only blemish is a surface airbubble on the inside of the vase.

The design was made in clear glass, opalescent, and yellow amber (extremely rare). All models are however relatively scarce, especially in good condition, and command large sums of money.

The opalescence in this model is particularly strong.

laliqueperruchesjade1-EDIT

JADE GREEN PERRUCHES – Rene Lalique – First executed in 1919.

A rare cased green vase of baluster shape, with small aperture, the design of pairs of lovebirds sitting amongst foliage. There is a dark green patina in the recesses, accentuating the design.

Height: 26cm.
Signatures: Engraved script ‘R Lalique’ on base.
Reference: (i) Felix Marcilhac, Rene Lalique – Catalogue Raisonne Des Oeuvres de Verre, Paris, 1989, p. 410, No. 876.
(ii) Patricia Bayer & Mark Waller, The Art of Rene Lalique, 1988, p. 149 #272.

Of all the colours Lalique produced, jade green is one of the rarest.  It is a ‘cased’ vase, which means that the inner layer is of a different colour glass, which gives the vessel a opaque or solid look. The inner layer is white glass, and this gives the green the appearance of jade.

This model was produced in clear, opalescent, red, amber, blue, green, and yellow glass. The jade green version is hard to find, was originally more expensive, and is today therefore quite expensive.

Statuette / Night-Light THAIS – Rene Lalique – First executed in 1925.

A rare opalescent glass figure of Thais, on an original bronze base with incised peacock design, which houses a light. A nude maiden is poised on one leg, her arms outstretched, supporting a drape. Thais is the companion piece to Suzanne, and often end up in the same collection.

Height: 28.6cm (height without base 23cm).
Signatures: Moulded ‘R LALIQUE’.
Reference: (i) Felix Marcilhac, Rene Lalique – Catalogue Raisonne Des Oeuvres de Verre, Paris, 1989, pg. 399, No. 833.
(ii) Patricia Bayer & Mark Waller, The Art of Rene Lalique, 1988, pictured pg. 97.

This statue was made in clear glass, opalescent, and yellow opalescent. The yellow opalescent version is the rarest, the clear the most common. It was sold as a free-standing figurine, and on a bronze base, either plain bronze or etched with two peacocks, which houses a light, and then it becomes a night-light (veilleuse).

‘LIGHTER THAN AIR’ A DEPICTION OF ADA MAY FROM THE CB COCHRAN REVIEW – Ferdinand Preiss – Circa 1920.

A bronze and ivory young woman holding a glass ball over her head, wearing a loose fitting robe, and standing on a brown and green onyx stylised base, with an engraved plaque.

Height: 34cm high.
Signatures: Engraved ‘F Preiss’ in the maquette.
Reference: (i) Bryan Catley, Art Deco and Other Figures, Antique Collectors’ Club, London, 1978, p. 273.
(ii) Victor Arwas, Art Deco Sculpture, London, 1992, p. 30.

Preiss’s ‘LIGHTER THAN AIR’ is one of his best known and most recognisable designs. Others are: ‘Flame Leaper’, ‘Torch Dancer’, ‘Invocation’ (Spring Awakening), ‘Con Brio’ and ‘Autumn Dancer’ (Fashion Lady).

Preiss is highly respected for his lifelike ivory carving, which surpasses the quality achieved by any other of his contemporary sculptors.

PAIR ART NOUVEAU MONUMENTAL VASES – WMF – Circa 1900.

An extremely rare pair of silverplated vases, a typically Art Nouveau water nymph in relief on the side of the vase, with a child leaning over the edge at the top. Each vase is different, not a mirror image of each other. Both have original brass liners.

Height: 56cm high.
Signatures: Stamped WMF underneath each foot.
Reference: Graham Dry, Art Nouveau Domestic Metalwork from Wurttembergische Metallwaren Fabrik (WMF) 1906, Antique Collectors’ Club, 1988, page 371, fig 127 & 127a.

These are the largest vases that WMF made. The pair are rare, and in our experience, one is lucky to find just one of the pair. The condition of the pair on offer, is superb.
